Morocco is still there, if you’re wondering

I went to Morocco with Sofia last week. We rented a car and drove everywhere but the extreme south. It was a lot of fun. We saw a lot of cool stuff. We did a lot of cool stuff. We got engaged in a 2000 year old whore house because I’m sentimental. Here’s the photographic evidence:

This is a view of Fes from outside of town.

The hills beyond Fes. A lot of olive trees.

A dude we talked to said the holes in the walls were for scaffolding. I'm not sure that's correct, but it seems feasible.

These were some people that wanted to be buried in the good juju field of the tomb.

Volubilis. A 2000-some year old town.

Founded by some Romanized Berbers.

Fancy mosaic floors.

Super rich olive farmers.

There were tons of pools and spas in this town.

They had multiple temples- there were supposed to be 20,000 people here at one time.

This was the former capital of Mauritania/Morocco. That is a statue pedestal in front of a giant temple complex.

This is what's left of the main civic building.

And Sofia.

The capital was moved to Fes some 200 years after this city's founding.

This town was once ruled by the son of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. Cool, right?

Now it's just a ruin.

These are the fields in front of Volubilis. There were villas outside the 3+ mile circuitous city wall. It proved too hard to defend against roving tribes, eventually.

This road carried traffic for hundreds of years and then was abandoned. This whole town was abandoned. This blows my mind.

Tribes occupied it, but the sewage system, water system, roads, etc all crumbled without engineering know-how.

This is a mosaic depicting Hercules' 12 trials. Motherfuckers loved them some Hercules.

There were kittens all over.

They were hanging out under this olive tree.

More kittens than orange trees, even.

So many kittens.

There we go. All gone. Wanna pay 17 bucks to walk around a sterile, soulless mosque? Yeah, me, either.

Fog's dissapating.

A weird fog bank had ensconsed this mosque in Casablanca.

It was a cool experience.

Had it not been for the fog, Casablanca would have sucked.

A Mexican gang is here for some reason.

Jemma El Fna mosque

This courtyard has just been restored. It looked like garbage before.

It had bathrooms, which is pretty cool for an ancient building.

A confusing labyrinth of rooms.

They restored all of this. It was about as grubby as a thousand years of boys could make a thing.

Jemma Al Fna mosque.

One group who disagreed with some part of religious doctrine killed the other group that formerly occupied this and reduced their shit to rubble.

All this was built on the ancient fortree which used to mark the extreme outside of town in Marrakesh.

They fixed the orientation of this mosque, though, so all the magic is correct now.

Built on top of the ruins of an older mosque which thought it was built pointing towards Mecca but was several degrees off.

Like many cities, there were streets everywhere.

A varitable cornucopia of streets.

Streets.

And people.

And some open squares.

And passageways leading to streets.

We stayed here in Marrakesh.

This dingaling screamed all night long, every night we were there. It was more soothing than it sounds.

It was a nice enclosed garden.

Super cool spot.

They had a place for weddings or instagram photos or something.

Pretty lush.

Dreese helped us out while we were there. Super nice dude.
